  • 1. What is a Single-user license?

A single-user local license can be installed to only one computer locally. Single-user licenses cannot be installed onto a server environment to be shared with other computers. If your environment requires more than one computer to access the installed product(s), a Multi-User Network License is required.

  • 2. What is a Multi-user license?

A multi-user network license can be installed to a server environment, on the computer that will be sharing the licenses, to other computers. It allows “x” number of concurrent workstation connections at a time. For example, a 5-User License can be installed on a central server or PC with as many workstation PCs as you want to have access, but it only allow 5 users to access the product(s) simultaneously.

  • 3. What is an Enterprise license?

An Enterprise License allows users to install on any combination of end-user PCs or workstations without limitations. It’s a cost-effective installation and licensing solution for installation deployments with several users. After a signed agreement is entered into directly with ALK, ALK will provide the user with an applicable CD/DVD-Set. The CD/DVD-Set contains the contracted registration information programmed directly onto the CD/DVD.

  • 4. What is an Evaluation license?

An Evaluation License provides a limited-time access to chosen product(s). After a signed agreement is entered into directly with ALK, ALK will provide the user with an applicable CD/DVD-Set along with an evaluation Product Key Code needed during the installation. This Product Key Code unlocks the contracted product(s) and is set to expire according to the timeframe agreed to in the signed agreement. When that time period ends, the user will not be able to access the installed product(s) unless the license is upgraded.

  • 5. What is a Citrix/Terminal Services license?

Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Services are programs generically called “middleware” that enable single-user software programs to be “shared” across a computer network. They are an alternative to using the multi-user support built into the network version in the ALK suite of products. Due to the nature of the these server environments, ALK requires each customer operating within a Citrix/Terminal Services environment to obtain a separate Citrix/Terminal Services License whether or not they are in possession of a Multi-User Network License. This license covers the use and support of the installed product(s) over a Citrix/Terminal Services network. It provides the customer a license to operate the purchased product(s) over a Citrix/Terminal Services network limited only to the amount of users specified in the license.

  • 6. What is an additional copy license?

By purchasing additional copy licenses, users are able to install locally onto additional PCs or workstations. For example, by purchasing five copy licenses, you can install locally onto five additional PCs or workstations. If you’re installing to a desktop PC and a laptop, two copy licenses are needed.

  • General – Licensing

  • 1. My Multi-user network license keeps giving me this error: “You have 1 license. There are already 1 people using the product.”

Open the email that was sent from alkservices@alk.com with the subject line “PC*MILER Activation Code for Product XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX”. Save the attached Net.lic file to the directory specified in the email to replace the existing file.

  • 2. When I try to activate PC*MILER, I get the error: “UNC Path is required.”

This error message occurs when a step is missed during the multi-user installation. The UNCPath.exe must be run from a workstation without errors in order for PC*MILER to identify the UNC Path. You must uninstall and reinstall to ensure this has been completed. If any error messages appear when running UNCPath.exe, check the permissions of the shared PmwXXX folder (where “xxx” refers to the version number such as 260 or 261) on the server and make sure all workstations have full access rights under sharing and security. Please make sure you are physically in front of a PC that is not the server, one that you did not launch the install from.

  • 3. My multi-user network license keeps telling me that I’m out of licenses but not all users are in PC*MILER at the same time.

This is usually seen when you have other applications connecting to PC*MILER.. If you have products that interface with PC*MILER, and those are open, they are using one license each (e.g. your TMS system, PC*MILER|FuelTax, etc.). To purchase more licenses contact an Enterprise Solutions Account Executive or call 800-377-6453, Ext. 1.

  • 4. During the installation of PC*MILER, when I try to activate I get the following error: "Desktop Product Key Detected - Incorrect Type Specified."

This error occurs when the Product Key Code has detected a local install instead of a Network install. If you are not doing a local install, please contact PC*MILER Technical Support with “Product Key Code Request” in the subject line including a brief description of the issue you’ve encountered, your company name, order number (if you have it), and your contact information so that an upgrade code can be sent to you.

  • 5. During the installation of PC*MILER, when I try to activate I get the following error: "Network Product Key Detected - Incorrect Type Specified."

This error occurs when the Product Key Code has detected a network install instead of a local install. If you are not doing a Network install, please contact PC*MILER Technical Support with “Product Key Code Request” in the subject line including a brief description of the issue you’ve encountered, your company name, order number (if you have it), and your contact information so that an upgrade code can be sent to you.
