PC*MILER Rail is used by the railroads to compute distances for mileage-based Fuel Surcharge calculations. Some railroads use mileage from PC*MILER Rail Practical routing, while others use Shortest route distances for their fuel surcharge calculation.
The Fuel Surcharge routing option in PC*MILER Rail provides mileage suitable for calculating fuel surcharges in conformance with the Surface Transportation Board ruling STB Ex Parte No. 661. It allows users to generate distances specifically for fuel surcharge applications, without having to remember whether Practical or Shortest is used for each of the railroads in the trip.
To generate Fuel Surcharge routing, select it as the Route Preference in either the route window or under the Routes tab > Options.
