Routing logic generates better routes and ETAs for all vehicle types

Improving PC*MILER’s routing logic to generate better routes and ETA estimates was a major focus for version 33. This version's improvements include:

  • Better ETA calculations using additional, speed-related data. ETA calculations have been improved by taking into account factors such as truck speed limits by jurisdiction and average speeds on lower class local roads.
  • Better routing for deliveries on local roads. PC*MILER’s routing algorithm has been improved to generate better routes for deliveries on roads specified as “No Thru Traffic” or “Delivery Only,” which are usually classed as local roads. 
  • Improved turn logic for smaller vehicles. PC*MILER routing now better reflects the reality that light duty vehicles (i.e. commercial truck classes 1, 2, and 3) are more capable than heavy-duty trucks, and sometimes medium-duty trucks, of negotiating sharp turns. It is now more likely for routes to be generated for smaller-sized vehicles via turns it might have avoided in past versions—resulting in more practical routes. 
  • Updated commercial vehicle specific data, including:
    • Improving street-level maps, including weight limits, vertical clearances and truck through-travel restrictions.
    • Adding newly constructed roads and exit interchanges.
    • Improving city and ZIP/Postal Code placement and alignment.
    • Improving geocoding to better match an address to its actual “ground truth” latitude/longitude point
    • Improving geocoding to better match road name abbreviations (for example, "BVD" or "BLVD" with "Boulevard"), better handle spacing in addresses, and improve house number and postal code matching.
    • Implementing customer-recommended map improvements submitted via MapSure, our easy-to-use, online map reporting tool—directly into map data.


Sites feature updated for more precise last-mile routing

(Internet connection and login required) The Sites feature, which defines a boundary around a Place so you can route vehicles to entrances and exits, generate more accurate directions, and provide better time and distance estimates, has been enhanced. 

  • If you enter a stop as an address, and that address falls within a defined Site, the Site information will be used in routing and the Site will be shown on the map.
  • Routing into and out of Site gates has been improved to account for the Gate Path. Gate Path is a setting in Content Tools—the web tool where you can create Sites to be shared with your licensed Trimble MAPS products—that specifies which roads you want drivers to take to approach or to depart a Site.
  • Additional pre-defined Sites have been added for a total of about 9,400 distribution centers, intermodal terminals, manufacturing plants, and truck stops. They can be pulled into PC*MILER from Content Tools via the Tools > Sync Content button. 



Memory footprint for the user interface has been reduced

The memory footprint of the user interface—the amount of main memory the PC*MILER application uses while running—has been reduced to better accommodate users running PC*MILER on virtual machines.


Push notifications provide alerts about features and updates

(Internet connection required) PC*MILER now provides push notifications about features and updates, such as when map data updates or software maintenance releases are available for download. These notifications can be switched on or off at any time in Applications Settings > General > Allow in-app messages.


Help us make PC*MILER better. PC*MILER can now gather anonymous information about crashes or errors as well as details about how often users are accessing various features. You can opt out of sharing this anonymous information by going to File > Applications Settings > General and unchecking the box under Usage & Privacy. 


AnyDesk tool available for remote support

(Internet connection required) PC*MILER now includes AnyDesk remote desktop for when you want to share your screen while working with one of our technical support agents. The tool is available via the Help tab > Remote Support Tool. 


Simplified data set names 

The data set names displayed under Map > Change Data Set; Help > About; and on the Map have been simplified to help users better understand whether their data is up to date and better identify which data set is actively in use. 



Updated Energy Data Now Available

(Energy add-on license required) PC*MILER Energy, a comprehensive road network of public and private oil and gas lease roads in North America, has been updated to include the latest (non-energy) road updates for Q2 2019.  



Warnings for Hazmat restrictions now appear in reports

(Hazmat add-on license required) After running a route, hazmat restriction warnings will now appear in the route window and in the Detailed Report. 



Routes now saved as .trp files for use in CoPilot navigation

Routes saved in PC*MILER are now saved by default as .trp files, rather than .r21 files as in previous versions. Both file types can be used interchangeably in PC*MILER, but .trp files can also be loaded into CoPilot for navigation.


PC*MILER BatchPro handles larger files more efficiently

PC*MILER BatchPro, a batch processing add-on for PC*MILER, can now process large input files of origin/destination pairs more efficiently. 


PC*MILER Connect logging tool can replay API call logs from any version 

(Available upon request to Technical Support) A new logging tool allows you to import old API call logs, from any version of PC*MILER Connect, and replay them in the latest version to detect APIs in use and also help identify if there are any technical issues that need attention. This tool is available by contacting our Technical Support team.


PC*MILER Supports IBM i Access Client Solutions

PC*MILER for the AS/400 (IBM System i), which allows PC*MILER to run on a Windows PC connected to your AS/400, now supports IBM i Access Client Solutions. IBM i Access Client Solutions provides a Java based, platform-independent interface with your Windows operating system.
